Day One: Flying start

After crossing the Bering Straits on foot during the Ice Age, it took the early settlers about 29,000 years to get down to the continent of South America. Well, Ian and I got there from London in 20 hours. Now THAT is evolution! We were soon enjoying a splendid breakfast in Gary and Kleverson's Sao Paulo apartment, which is very swish and in a great neighbourhood, Jardins, which is San Franciscan in style and mood - hilly and laid back. Wonderful food, especially the fruit. I´m usually an apples-and-bananas man, but will now hunt down acai, caju, kaki, pinha and papaya in Kennington Tesco. Or perhaps Waitrose would be a better bet. Was in a bit of a daze as we explored, but a park designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer was a haven of calm. Later I had the best steak I had ever tasted. The waiters brought every part of a cow (there´s a helpful diagram) and you flip a counter on your table from red to green when you want them to stop. Which we did, but we later wished we had done so earlier.

THINGS I DIDN´T KNOW BEFORE TODAY:
Brazilian drivers understand poor Spanish
Ten times as many African slaves were brought to Brazil as the US
